Abstract

Data on food availability at the national level provided an indirect assessment of food consumption for whole populations. Such information suffered from the problem of inequity and was of limited use to the nutritionist who was concerned with food availability at the household level. Since a primary objective of any food and nutrition programme was to improve the nutritional status of man it was necessary to focus food consumption studies at the micro level. This called for in-depth understanding of man's behaviour in relation to food acquisition and intra-household food distribution. This paper identified the key determinants that might influence the household behaviours involved including the significant role of women in food provisioning for household members.
