Abstract
A process for producing ethanol using the bacterium Z. mobilis is under development at the University South Wales. Compared with traditional yeast fermentations the process has the advantages of faster rates, simpler operation and improved yields. Current emphasis of the research is towards the genetic improvements of a selected strain of Z. mobilis. Licence agreements have been signed with two commercial groups for scale-up studies and raw material evaluations.
