Abstract

The captive population of Indochinese tigers (Panthera tigris corbetti) throughout the world is very small. Information on veterinary medicine and husbandry is essential for captive management and breeding of this rare felid. Ecto and endoparasites constitute a major problem in wild and captive tigers. Haemaphysalis spp. Amblyomma spp. and Muscina spp. are the ectoparasites isolated while the endoparasites consisted of Paragonimus westermanii Spirometra spp. Physaloptera spp. Toxocara leonina Strongylus spp. Taenia taeniaeformis Ancylostoma spp. Toxascaris spp. Toxocara spp. Gnathostoma spp. Capillaria spp. lsosporura spp. and Trichuris spp. Paragonimus westermanii occurs in 80 of the Indochinese tigers in the study. Treatment of lung flukes using praziquantel resulted in lowering and subsequent cessation of fluke eggs in the faeces. However the adults within the nodules in the lung parenchyma were not affected.
