Preliminary observations on a field population of Elaeidobius kamerunicus the oil palm pollinating weevil, in NIFOR, Benin, Nigeria

Abstract

Anthesising male inflorescence were randomly sampled, one per palm in NIFOR (field 56), Benin, Nigeria. Five spikelets were randomly sampled from the top, middle, and bottom regions of each inflorescence on each day of survey, from March to September, 2002. Preliminary observations indicates a mean weevil distribution per spike let of 51. 40 + 4.36 at the top, 52.48 + 5.32 at the middle, and 46.20 + 4.36 at the bottom of each inflorescence. There were no significant differences in the mean numbers of adults weevils in the various positions, but there were significant differences in the mean number of adult weevils sampled in the various dates. (P=0.001). Microscopic examination of adult weevils indicate that nematodes are associated with the weevils and the spike lets. Results of this preliminary survey so far indicates that E. kamerunicus is a major insect pollinator of the oil palm in NIFOR oil Palm plantations. The association of these parasitic nematodes may have implication on their pollination efficiencies. Results of these findings will help in elucidating on one of the factors that govern pollination efficiency, percentage fruit set and the occurrence of seasonal peak in Fresh Fruit Bunches in Nigeria.
