Abstract

An adult budgerigar with mite infestation was found dead and submitted for post-mortem examination. The anterior part of the left lung was consolidated and congested. There was also moderate and generalised congestion of visceral organs. The inflammatory response in the lung tissue was minimal with few heterophils in some alveoli. The blood vessels of the lung were necrotic and inflamed with evidence of bacterial colonies in the wall of affected vessels. Bacterial colonies were also observed in the interstitium of the necrotic alveolar septa. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was isolated in pure culture from the affected lung.
