Abstract
A study on species diversity of understorey bats was conducted from June 2002 until November 2003. Five study plots were constructed at five different elevations. The field technique for generating species lists involves mist-netting and harp-trapping. Each captured individuals was inspected and measured for species identification besides other information such as sexual condition, weight and morphological measurements. A total of 322 individuals comprising of four Families and 18 species of bat were captured. Fourteen species were insectivorous bats from the family of Rhinolophidae, Hipposideridae and Vespertilionidae except four species of fruit bats from the family of Pteropodidae. Family Rhinolophidae has the highest number of species (six species) followed by Vespertilionidae with five species. Three species that have a highest number of individuals captured are Cynopterus brachyotis (Malaysian Fruit Bat), Cynopterus horsfieldi (Horsfield's Fruit Bat) and Rhinolophus affinis (Intermediate Horseshoe Bat) (36.9%, 15.5% and 15.2% of total capture respectively). Species Diversity Index indicated that Plot B has the highest diversity of bat species and the individuals' distribution for each species is more even among the five plots.
